Modern-Twist items, like the Vinotagz, are crafted out of translucent silicone, which means your guests can personalize their wine charms – and you can simply wipe it off to use at the next soiree.

Owner Lisa Clinton opened her shop this month near Verite, the cupcake Mecca. Juniper's Spartan, uncluttered, space has concrete floors, natural wood display shelves, and a sleek black bench seat. The simplicity of the decor reflects Clinton's philosophy about her shop. "Designers who consider the whole process of their creativity rather than the end result create special and more valuable items. I'm drawn to designers whose clothing is going to last through trends and I'm especially interested in those working to tread more lightly on the planet," says Clinton.

If you’re eager for a sneak peek at the company’s 2007 designs, visit www.rosannainc.com where you can see and buy her latest creations before they hit stores. I’m particularly smitten with the “Boho” refined porcelain tableware. The eclectic bohemian mixture of botanicals, stripes –– even polka dots –– makes for a lively and fashionable tabletop (set of six dessert plates, $48; set of six dinner plates, $90).

Fiesta music wafts through the air, a saleswoman offers customers a sampler of chips and dip (made with packets of spices available for sale, of course), and the exposed brick and warm “adobe” walls flatter the store's astonishingly varied inventory of furniture, garden wares and tchotchkes.

In the context of Eric Akines' new boutique on First Avenue, the term "polite society" refers to the quality and tradition of first rate goods. Indeed, that's what you'll find here among the urban decor of canted steel girders, artsy columns and walls stamped with ants to form repetitive patterns. Akines has amassed a wealth of fashion-forward clothing and accessories for men and women, as well as antique and modern home furnishings from around the world.

Gen X parents and grandparents tired of all the cutesy baby accoutrements out there should take a trip to tottini, a newly opened shop that carries "furnishings for offspring." This is not to say that you won't use the word cute when in this shop. I did about 52 times. It's simply a lively and colorful aesthetic with modern design in mind where pink and baby blue take a backseat to fashionable colors.
