Bishop Blanchet coach George Monica got his 500th career high-school baseball victory on Monday, a 7-1 win at Ingraham in the Braves' Metro League season opener.

The 63-year-old Monica, in his 34th year as Blanchet head coach, became only the third active baseball coach in the state with 500 wins. Gary Hatch of Sehome (Bellingham) and Stan Taloff of Archibishop Murphy (Everett) also have reached the milestone.

The all-time state leader is retired Ephrata coach Dave Johnson, who had 663. Dan White of Eastmont (East Wenatchee) retired with 600.

"The fun part was, a whole bunch of former players were at the game," said Monica, a 1967 Blanchet graduate. "It was great to see everyone."
