Upscale Appearance In A Down Turned Economy

I have found that when things tighten up economically people tend to dress better. I believe this is because they have to dress better than their competition in order to stand out from the crowd.
My tailor, who does work for many local stores, says he is swamped with alterations. He said the Nordstrom in Seattle is doing great on clothing sales. Have you seen this increase in professional dress in the local workplace and what do you think about it?

This is so true in my office. We have a large sales staff and the top producers are the folks who have always dressed well. They are not necessarily the most fashionable but have it put together; nice looking shirts, quality slacks/skirts, classy coats. Other, not so successful, salespeople either follow suit or fade away. Denim has died in our office.

I have certainly seen everyone stepping up their game on all levels. To me personal appearance is where it begins.

Well, Mr. Haberdasher, I have seen professional dress turn around in Seattle in a big way over the last 9 years or so. It was kind of weird seeing what people thought they could get away with in a professional environment.

Still today it seems like when people dress up in suits they do pretty well, but when they try to dress down they are casually confused. This month I've seen one person really pull of a cool casual outfit and countless who don't seem to know what's going on. So, Mr. Haberdasher, I ask you to please get out there and dress Seattle better. They want to be well dressed, they really do. Some of them just fall short in the know how category.

In our work environment we have a pretty casual and relaxed dress code. Working in the web design field, we are afforded a bit more casual or laid back presence than say a law firm or bank would allow. For the most part as long as you are well groomed, have a presentable appearance and work hard you are pretty much good to go most of the time. We do have potential clients that visit our office so jeans and t-shirt are out of the question. But keans and an open collar shirt are acceptable most of the time.

Hi All,

Wanted to let everyone know about how you can look good with brand name lables and for far less the money. I just opened a high end women's consignment shop in Downtown Bellevue called Between Friends Consignment & Gifts. Most of my current merchandise is from West Bellevue and Seattle. I am also carrying samples and overstock. I have many amazing items from some of the nicest homes in Bellevue. I am just getting my online shopping site setup. You can visit www.bfconsignment.com or come by 137 106th Ave NE in Bellevue.

Hope to see you
Jill

Great topic Jeff! (You knew I'd agree with you!).
I like to call this kind of behavior "Being Intentional". When you know that the market is tight and you are working to bring your personal brand attributes to the forefront you have to be more intentional with how you are showing up.

Just walking out of the house looking like you don't care doesn't cut it any more. But making an intentional effort to bridge the gap between how you feel and how you look is what gets noticed, supports confidence and communicates (non-verbally) what you bring to the table. Yes Sarah_9, no matter who you are, because there is always someone else out there that's willing to show up and show that they mean business.
Be your brand!

Yes, tis the season to get great deals on buttoned-up fashions at penny pinching prices! In fact this weekend, JCPenney is having a huge sale on Haggar for men. So if you husband, brother, father, or any guy in your life could use a little spruce up in his closet - hit the sale. Haggar pants as low as $19.99, but it's only this Fri. and Sat. (Nov. 20-21)at JCPenney. Oh, and get on Santa’s good list by bringing in a pair of old pants to donate to the Goodwill during the event too. It’s called the Haggar Trade In, Trade Up, Give Back Event!
